There is a Chinese story of a farmer who used an old horse to till his fields. One day, the horse escaped into the hills and when the farmer’s neighbors sympathized with the old man over his bad luck, the farmer replied, “Bad luck? A week later, the horse returned with a herd of horses from the hills and this time the neighbors congratulated the farmer on his good luck. Then, when the farmer’s son was attempting to tame one of the wild horses, he fell off its back and broke his leg. Everyone thought this very bad luck. Not the farmer, whose only reaction was, “Bad luck? Some weeks later, the army marched into the village and conscripted every able-bodied youth they found there. When they saw the farmer’s son with his broken leg, they let him off. Now was that good luck or bad luck? Everything that seems on the surface to be an evil may be a good in disguise.
And everything that seems good on the surface may really be an evil. We Wish You a Merry Christmas” is a popular English Christmas carol from the West Country of England.
The Bristol-based composer, conductor and organist Arthur Warrell is responsible for the popularity of the carol. Warrell arranged the tune for his own University of Bristol Madrigal Singers, and performed it with them in concert on December 6, 1935. I wish you a Merry Christmas”. The earlier history of the carol is unclear. The greeting “a merry Christmas and a happy New Year” is recorded from the early eighteenth century. And a cellar full of beer. It was sung by “mummers” — i.
Farmer Buller’s door, where they knew they should find a welcome. After they are allowed in and perform a Mummers play, the boys are served beer by the farmer’s maid. Other sources show this greeting as current in different parts of England during the nineteenth century. The origin of this Christmas carol lies in the English tradition wherein wealthy people of the community gave Christmas treats to the carolers on Christmas Eve, such as “figgy pudding” that was very much like modern-day Christmas puddings. We wish you a merry Christmas, We wish you a merry Christmas, We wish you a merry Christmas And a happy New Year. We wish you a merry Christmas And a happy New Year! 2 Oh, bring us some figgy pudding, Oh, bring us some figgy pudding, Oh, bring us some figgy pudding, And bring it right here. Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year.
